Every season comes to an end

Posted: April 19, 2011 in Uncategorized

Hey Dawg Fans,

First of all I would like to thank you so much for following and supporting our team all season. We truly appreciate everything our fans, parents, friends and family do for us. Coming from a senior it is hard for me to say that our lacrosse season has come to a close. On Sunday, we played in the SWLL Championship game and although our fight was hard, Florida was the better team and pulled out a 12-9 victory. We as a team are proud of our efforts and had an amazing season.

A special congrats to a few of our teammates who were recognized for excellent play in the SWLL season. These Dawgs were voted on by opposing teams which show how much of an impact they made on the field this year! Congratulations to Laura Bean (Senior/Midfield), Sarah Kane (Graduate Student/Goalie), Michele Manis (Junior/Defense), and Lisa “Avatar” Riondet (Freshman/Midfield). Michele Manis was also recognized as SWLL Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row! Congrats DAWGS!

At the end of every game we have a team talk that helps us focus on the good, bad and ugly of the game and to look ahead at what we need to improve to the next game. Although, there is no “next” game this season we still had the team talk which was bittersweet but optimistic for the future of the team.

Bean (senior/captain) announced that the 2011-2012 captains are Michele Manis, Mary Cate McCue and Taylor Lugash. Last week we also announced next years executive board: Kaitlin Shumate (President), Emily Seidel (Vice-President), Samantha Segers (Treasurer), Melissa “Fetus” Moore (Fundraising Chair), Kelly Arnhart (Public Relations Chair), Lisa “Avatar” Riondet (Social Chair), Lindsay “Goose” Lehrer and Lindsay Brinker (Co-Merchandise Chairs). The team has AMAZING leadership for the 2011-2012 season and they will succeed on and off the field!

One last special (personal) shout out to our senior/captain, Laura Bean. She is one of the best lacrosse players and people I know. I think the team would not be where they are today without Bean’s leadership as captain on the field. She is going to do amazing things after she graduates this summer and I wish her all the best! I couldn’t have asked for a better person to share my last season with than Bean!

Thanks for following the blog this season, I have truly enjoyed sharing the inner workings of our team to you all! Kelly will do and AMAZING job next year keeping you all informed! Again, I appreciate everything you all do for the team! Thanks for cheering for the DAWGS!

GO DAWGS!

TIME FOR SWLL

Posted: April 14, 2011 in Uncategorized

Hey Dawg Fans,

If you are new to UGA LAX you need to know that SWLL CHAMPIONSHIP weekend is the biggest weekend of the year! We start every season with the goal of winning SWLL. Last year we accomplished this is AMAZING fashion, just check out the video from our sudden death overtime win over Florida! We know that the past couple of weeks have been hard for the team, we are working out all of the little kinks to get ready for this weekend. We all know we have the talent and the heart we just need to put it all together and I KNOW that we can!

In the first round we play 7th seed Ole Miss at 11am at Lassiter High School. In the regular season we won 17-5 over the Rebels but we know that this team just keeps on improving and is one of the fastest teams in SWLL, our Coach Tietz made us run extra sprints yesterday for that reason! We are hoping that we can pull out a win over Ole Miss to advance to the Semi-finals vs. the winner of the 4th seed South Carolina and 5th seed Florida State game. This game will be played at 5:30pm. If you remember from the beginning of our season we squeaked by with a 13-12 win over USC. They are a great team and only lost to Florida by 5 this past weekend. USC is always a strong offensive team with tons of speed in the midfield. We have not played Florida State this season but they come into the tournament with a 8-2 record with the only 2 losses to Florida and Central Florida. I think the 4/5 game will be a tough match-up. After the semi-finals are played the finalist continue onto the SWLL Championship finals which will be played Sunday April 17th at 1pm at Lassiter High School. Follow us on twitter for game time updates!

We are so excited for this weekend and want a BIG CROWD out there to support our efforts to defend our 2010 SWLL title! Please try and make it our to Lassiter HS, it is the last SWLL lacrosse that will be played this season!

GO DAWGS!

On a side note if you are ever in ATHENS, GA go and try out SWEET PEPPERS DELI on the corner of West Board and Pulaski St. They were so nice to let us host a percentage weekend there for A-town and they contributed over $400 to UGA WOMEN’S LACROSSE! Thank you so much for your support Sweet Peppers and to our upcoming Fundraising Chair, Fetus for setting up the weekend!

Long over due update

Posted: April 1, 2011 in Uncategorized

Hey Dawg Fans,

First, I would like to apologize for my lack of updates lately. My mind was going crazy with A-town for the past few weeks! Now that A-town is over we are in the final stretch of our season, we will be traveling to Lindenwood University for a tournament next weekend (April 7-10th) and the next weekend is SWLL Championships (April 16-17th)! We did great at A-town despite the rain and the fact we were running the tournament! Thank you to all of our parents, friends, and fans that came out to support us and volunteered to take stats and sell t-shirts at A-town! WE COULDN’T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU ALL! And a special shout-out to our coaches who helped tremendously with the logistics of the tournament!

A-town was a rainy yet fun and exciting weekend for lacrosse. We are so honored that we had 8 TOP 20 teams come down to Athens to participate. We started out the weekend vs. UC Davis (came in ranked #2, now #1) we started off really strong and lost a little momentum the rest of the game which the Aggies took advantage of and settled the game at 13-8. On Saturday we had a thriller vs. Texas. We dominated and then let the Longhorns work their way back to a tie 10-10 at the end of regulation. In overtime, we took over and scored 3 to make the final score 13-11 in favor of the  Dawgs! Unfortunately, due to weather conditions we did not get to finish our game versus Colorado (came in #1, now #2) where we were winning 8-2. The game does not count toward our season, but it sure does show the rest of the WCLA nation that the Dawgs are ready to take down ANYONE! On Sunday, games were moved to Duncan Creek Park in Dacula, GA. We played a close game with Colorado State (current #7) but couldn’t find the back of the net enough and lost 5-4. Our final game was against Boston College (current #19) who gave us a back to back battle before we took control of the draw and defense to settle the game at 10-6. We are very proud of our play at A-town and look forward to showing more of what UGA Lacrosse is all about at LU and SWLL!

We are looking forward to the Lindenwood Invitational in St. Louis, MO. We will be leaving Athens (via a charter bus) Thursday afternoon for the long drive to MO. Our first game is late Friday night (4/8) against the tournament hosts Lindenwood. We will then play BYU and Minnesota on Saturday and finish up the weekend on Sunday versus Michigan.

I will be better about updating this blog this coming week and I promise Name that teammate will be back this coming week.

Enjoy the weekend! The team will be enjoying our first weekend off of lacrosse in a LONG time :)

GO  DAWGS!
